Why Ammonia Has Been in Hair Colour for Decades
Ammonia's role in traditional permanent hair colour is functional and well-understood. It serves two purposes:
It raises the hair's pH. Hair has a naturally slightly acidic pH. Lifting the pH with an alkaline agent like ammonia causes the cuticle — the outer protective layer of the hair shaft — to swell and open, allowing colour pigment molecules and developer (hydrogen peroxide) to penetrate into the cortex of the hair.
It activates the developer. Ammonia and hydrogen peroxide work together in a chemical reaction that deposits new colour pigment into the cortex while breaking down existing melanin.
Ammonia does this effectively. The problem is that it does so aggressively. The cuticle is forced open under high alkalinity, and this stress — repeated across many colour appointments — leads to cuticle damage, loss of moisture, increased porosity, and over time, the brittle, dry texture that characterises over-processed hair. There is also a physical irritation factor: ammonia off-gasses into the air during processing, producing the sharp chemical smell familiar from traditional salon colour.
